Old town tour with a visit to the exhibition ‘Window to the Landscape’ at the Diocesan Museum

On this tour, you will get to know the old town – Freising's attractive and lively historic centre. The route leads up to the cathedral hill, where you can enjoy the view of the surrounding area and the hilly landscape. You will then visit the Diocesan Museum.

The DIMU is hosting a special exhibition entitled "Window to the Landscape. The Views of Valentin Gappnigg" (german "Fenster in die Landschaft. Die Ansichten des Valentin Gappnigg") will be on display at the DIMU until 11 January 2026. Between 1698 and 1702, the painter created a unique series of landscape paintings for the "Fürstengang" (a ay for the prince-bishops) in Freising Cathedral on behalf of Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Eckher. These 32 gouaches represent the widely scattered possessions of the Freising bishopric. Some of these delicate tempera paintings are the earliest views of the communities ever created. For conservation reasons, the paintings were replaced by copies in 1885. Now, however, the delicate originals have found their way back from the DIMU depot to the museum after a long time. They provide fascinating insights into cultural history. Several books with the oldest views of Freising are also on display.
