Freising – The most historical city on the River Isar

A centre of scholarship over the centuries, Cathedral Hill embodies over 1200 years of history as the seat of the prince-bishops. Those eminences included Otto of Freising, the most famous philosopher of history of the medieval age. The cathedral, with its striking towers, mysterious Romanesque Beasts’ Pillar and superb Baroque interior designed by the Asam Brothers, is one of Freising’s most important sights.

On the opposite hill is Weihenstephan, once a Benedictine monastery and now the nucleus of one of the most modern scientific centres in Germany and Europe. Nutrition and environmental sciences and land use are the pillars of this learning and research hub, together with institutes and faculties for the sciences of brewing, agriculture and horticulture, food technology, dairy science and forest science. In the vicinity of the Technical University, University of Applied Sciences and the Bavarian State Institutes, an innovation and startup centre for green biotechnology spans the link between science and business. And, of course, Weihenstephan Hill is home to probably the oldest brewery in the world, with a taproom serving beers that attract guests from near and far.

The city spreads out between the two hills; a sprawling market, narrow lanes, romantic squares and nooks, warm, welcoming and hospitable restaurants and bars, and a cultural diversity that entrances young and old alike.
