Cycle tours in the Freising region
Whether you’re an easy-going leisure cyclist or love to tackle ambitious routes, we invite you to explore Freising’s sights on two wheels and strike out into the surrounding countryside along pleasant, quiet country roads. So jump into the saddle and set out on the “Bockerlradweg”, or take the kids along on a swimming trip to nearby Stoibermühle Lake. And did you know that our cathedral city is located on many well-known long-distance cycle routes and offers numerous certified Bett+Bike (Bed+Bike) accommodations for overnight stops?
Isarradweg (Isar Cycle Route, approx. 290 kilometres): From the source of the River Isar into the Deggendorfer Land region.
From Munich, you pass through Garching and reach Greater Freising amid lush countryside. The riverside forest landscape, rich in fauna and flora, extends through the whole region from Eching to Moosburg. Freising is located directly on the Isarradweg cycle route, with many tempting restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a relaxing break. For detailed information about the Isarradweg cycle route and downloadable GPS data, visit https://www.isarradweg.de.
Munich – Regensburg - Prague (approx. 450 kilometres): Travel to Prague along ‘roads less travelled’
This international cycling route takes largely traffic-free paths from the ducal city of Munich to the ancient imperial city of Regensburg before finishing in Prague, the ‘Golden City’. In the Freising region the route passes through the valley floors of the River Isar and River Abens, making it an attractive option for novice cyclists. From Munich, take the Isarradweg cycling route to Marzling. Now join the Abens Cycle Route through lovely Hallertau before meeting the Donau-Radweg for the rest of the journey. You’ll find countless leisure opportunities and events to visit along the way.
Hallertauer Hopfentour (Hallertau Hop Tour, approx. 170 kilometres): Through the Hallertau region on two wheels
To ensure you have plenty of time for sightseeing and beer gardens along the way, we recommend allowing three to five days for the Hopfentour. In the market town of Nandlstadt, the Waldbad open-air bathing lake is an inviting chance for a refreshing dip, and Market Street with its pretty town hall is a charming spot to take a breather. From Nandlstadt, cyclistgs can join the Abens-Radweg to reach Freising. A short detour along the Hop Tour from Reichertshausen to Au in der Hallertauprovides the opportunity to visit the Auer Brewery. The cycling route through the hop fields offers fascinating encounters with the ‘green gold’, as the hops are known, in all seasons.
Ammer-Amper Cycling Route (approx. 195 kilometres): Through the beautiful Amper Valley
This cycling route begins at the source of the River Ammer at Oberammergau and joins the Isarradweg at Moosburg an der Isar. In the Freising region, the route passes through the beautiful Amper Valley. Ideal for leisurely cyclists, it winds through the valley on quiet asphalt roads, sometimes alongside the river and sometimes further away. Shortly after Langenbach, why not make a detour to Haag an der Amper and drop into one of Bavaria’s loveliest beer gardens before arriving at the little town of Moosburg an der Isar. Make sure to leave plenty of time for your stay here and visit the open-air pool, St Kastulus’ Church and the charming historic centre with ice-cream shops, cafes and restaurants. Abens-Radweg (approx. 66 kilometres): From Freising into the world-famous hop-growing region.
The Abens-Radweg cycle route starts at Marzling, branching off the Isarradweg to the north-west and winding through the Hallertau (or ‘Holledau’ in the local dialect), the world-famous hop-growing region. The cycle route runs along quiet roads to Langenbach before crossing the Amper Valley. Passing fields studded with hop poles and neat villages, you arrive at Nandlstadt with its delightful historic architecture, an ideal spot for a relaxing break at a cafe or restaurant. The open-air pool in the village of Tegernbach, between Nandlstadt and Rudelzhausen, is a great chance for a refreshing dip. Just before the state border, Rudelzhausen is home to the Brünnlkapelle chapel – one of the best-known pilgrimage destinations in the Hallertau region, where a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary is said to have been discovered.
Where Beer Came From (approx. 88 kilometres) From the Purity Laws through the land of hops to the fine art of brewing – Cycle through the Hallertau region between the two major beer cities of Ingolstadt and Freising
This themed cycle tour takes enthusiasts on a journey of over 80 kilometres through the heart of Hallertau, the world’s largest continuous hop-growing region, and links the Danube Cycle Route with the Isar Cycle Route. The route takes in Upper Bavaria’s major brewing centres of Ingolstadt and Freising: Ingolstadt, the city where the Bavarian Purity Laws for beer were first passed in 1516; and Freising, home to the world’s oldest brewery, where the culture of brewing is nurtured. Between these points, the route runs past extensive hop plantations and richly historical towns including Vohburg, Wolnzach und Au in der Hallertau. Of course, plentiful delicious specialities of regional cuisine can be sampled along the way to keep body and soul together.
