Freising’s beer festivals

The first high point of the calendar is “Tag des Bieres” [Beer Day], commemorating the passing of the Bavarian Purity Law in 1516. The festival is held every 23 April on Marienplatz in Freising, with a procession, the proclaiming of the Law by a herald on horseback, and with live music and games. Summer offers the Altstadtfest (July) and Weihenstephaner Bergfest (August). The next high point of the Freising “beer year” is in September with the Volksfest fair, preceded by a public beer tasting; it is followed by the Korbiniansfest of the arch-diocese (November), for which a special beer is brewed.

Tag des Bieres - Beer Day

Celebration of the Bavarian Purity Law

Freising, city of brewers and scholars, joins forces with its two richly historical breweries – Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan and Gräfliches Hofbrauhaus Freising – and with students‘ associations to hold Beer Day, a fun festival for all the family. It centres around the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, which is proclaimed by a herald on horseback at 4 pm before the beer barrels can be tapped. Of course a wide variety of food and drink is available, while live music creates a vibrant atmosphere. The event will be cancelled in the case of bad weather.

Altstadtfest

Celebrating together in Freising’s “good room”

Join in the celebrations when the whole city centre becomes one big beer garden! The programme includes fun activities for children as well as music stages at various locations and an extensive and varied range of food and drinks on offer. The popular Freising Rock Night is held on Marienplatz on the evening before the festival. The event will be cancelled in the event of bad weather.

Weihenstephaner Bergfest

Regional delicacies and speciality beers from the world’s oldest brewery
The family-oriented festival on Weihenstephan Hill is traditionally held in the historical academy courtyard of the brewery. The children can look forward to a great children's program, while the adults enjoy the summer with music and a relaxed atmosphere - and all with free admission. On the menu are tasty Bavarian specialities and, of course Weihenstephan speciality beers, plus alcohol-free beverages and sweet treats. The event will be cancelled in the case of bad weather.

Public beer tasting before the Volksfest

What does the festival beer at the Freisinger Volksfest taste like? The city of Freising and its breweries Weihenstephan and Hofbrauhaus traditionally invite you to a public tasting.
Let's go to the beer tasting! Once again this year, all fans of the folk festival are cordially invited to subject the Freising festival beers to a first taste test before the official beer tapping at a public beer tasting on Marienplatz.

Freising Volksfest

The Luitpoldanlage is transformed into a funfair, with around 50 fairground rides, snack stalls and of course the traditional huge beer tent.
During ten fun-packed days, visitors can choose from super-fast high-tech fairground rides and gentler traditional carousels, enjoy lots of delicious specialities and great music, and be amazed by a spectacular firework display and thrilling sports events. This diverse programme offers the ultimate in entertainment – in line with Freising’s venerable tradition.
